A 30-Year Overnight Sensation

SRL hands down best in show! The only kinetic work and live performance in the exhibition "Under The Black Sun: California Art 1974 - 1981" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. By far the De-manufacturing machine was the favorite of the night at the special opening at MOCA on Friday, September 30 for artists, museum members, and staff. The crowd was a steady flow as Mark Pauline ran the animated props of rotten squid, fish, chicken, and eels, loaded with some snap caps, and stink bombs, through the machine all evening. Visitors could not get enough even though the place stunk to high hell, they watched as the machine chopped up the props and tossed the debris out onto the feet and in some cases faces of the audience. In the video by Allan Kelly, the gentleman at the beginning in the suit with eyeglasses is the Director of the museum Jeffrey Deitch. He seemed to enjoy talking with Mark and watching the machine in operation. It only took 32 years for recognition from the art establishment, better late than never... -Susan Joyce
